Sustainability continues to take centre stage at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, as the five-star beachfront property secures its third consecutive Green Globe Certification, reaffirming its long-term environmental strategy and commitment to responsible hospitality.

Re-certified in November 2025, the hotel located at the gateway of Abu Dhabi with sweeping views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the tranquil Abu Dhabi Creek has steadily embedded sustainability into every layer of its operations.

According to Shamsudheen Thekkepattayil, Director of Environmental, Health & Safety, the milestone reflects more than compliance. “Achieving our third year of certification is a testament to how sustainability is integrated across all aspects of our operations from resource management to community engagement,” he said, highlighting the property’s ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact for future generations.

At the core of Fairmont Bab Al Bahr’s sustainability drive is a strong focus on innovation-led environmental solutions.

In partnership with A1RWATER, the hotel has implemented atmospheric water generation systems that convert humidity into mineralised drinking water on-site. This initiative alone has delivered measurable environmental impact:

  • Over 500,000 plastic bottles replaced between November 2023 and 2024
  • More than 6 tonnes of plastic waste eliminated
  • Approximately 46 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced

The technology also plays a crucial role in conserving valuable water resources, aligning with regional sustainability priorities.

Energy efficiency is another pillar of the hotel’s long-term roadmap. Following a comprehensive energy audit, the property has launched a multi-year investment plan aimed at significantly reducing energy consumption by 2030, reinforcing its environmental commitments at scale.

Rethinking Dining: Reducing Waste and Promoting Conscious Choices

Sustainability extends into the kitchens at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, where a series of initiatives are reshaping how food is sourced, prepared, and consumed.

The hotel has adopted the Winnow system to monitor and reduce kitchen waste, while also prioritising locally sourced produce and coffee. Menus increasingly feature vegetarian and vegan options, alongside carbon-labelled dishes designed to encourage more informed, eco-conscious dining decisions.

As a result, the hotel is currently on track to reduce food waste by 10% within the year, marking steady progress toward a more sustainable food ecosystem.

Beyond its operations, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr continues to expand its impact through community-driven environmental initiatives.

The hotel actively collaborates with the Emirates Environmental Group, participating in nationwide programmes such as Clean Up UAE, tree-planting campaigns, and waste management initiatives.

Internally, employees referred to as “Heartists” are regularly involved in sustainability activities. A recent highlight includes the revitalisation of the hotel’s vegetable garden, supporting both greener operations and greater self-sufficiency.

Strengthening Local Partnerships and Inclusive Programs

Community engagement remains a key pillar of the hotel’s broader CSR strategy.

Fairmont Bab Al Bahr provides a platform for local artisans and suppliers, hosting exhibitions that showcase traditional and cultural Arabic products. These initiatives not only promote heritage craftsmanship but also support small businesses within the region.

The hotel also works closely with organisations such as the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Special Education. Through collaborative programmes including cooking classes, vocational training, and interactive workshops—the partnerships aim to foster inclusion, learning, and skill development within the community.

With its latest Green Globe re-certification, Fairmont Bab Al Bahr continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable luxury hospitality in the UAE. From cutting-edge water technologies to community partnerships, the property’s integrated approach reflects a broader shift in the industry—where environmental responsibility and guest experience go hand in hand.
