Sydney’s eastern shoreline has welcomed a renewed icon, as InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach unveils the final stage of its extensive, multi-million-dollar transformation, positioning itself as one of the city’s most compelling beachfront stays.

Part of the global luxury and lifestyle portfolio of IHG Hotels & Resorts, the property’s latest evolution introduces a series of elevated guest experiences, including a striking ocean-facing infinity pool and terrace, a redefined Club InterContinental lounge, and newly added pickleball courts. Still to come is the much-anticipated Èliva Spa, set to open in early May.

This relaunch reflects the broader evolution of the InterContinental brand, which continues to expand globally with a philosophy rooted in cultural connection and enriching travel experiences. At Coogee, that vision translates into a design-led, experience-driven stay that blends coastal ease with refined luxury.

The transformation led by renowned architecture and design firm Woods Bagot extends across 198 guestrooms and suites. Many feature expansive ocean views and light-filled interiors, offering a contemporary interpretation of beachfront living tailored to today’s travellers.

At the heart of the reimagined property is the newly unveiled pool deck. Positioned above the coastline, the infinity-edge pool is heated year-round and framed by uninterrupted ocean views. Private cabanas, sun lounges and layered seating areas create a relaxed yet polished setting that transitions effortlessly from daytime lounging to sunset gatherings. Landscaping plays a key role in shaping the atmosphere, with a mix of palms, coastal grasses and native species providing both texture and privacy without detracting from the panoramic outlook. Seasonal touches, such as fire pits in cooler months, add to the ambience.

Adjacent to the pool, the hotel’s dining offering reflects a laid-back coastal sensibility. The menu balances classic favourites with lighter, health-forward options, including the introduction of ‘Nourish Bowls’ nutritionally balanced dishes available throughout the day, aligning with the brand’s focus on flexibility and wellbeing.

A more exclusive layer of the guest experience is found at Club InterContinental. Designed as a private sanctuary, the lounge features sun-washed tones, natural textures and subtle nautical accents. The space is divided into intimate zones suited to different moments, from quiet morning coffees to informal meetings and evening relaxation. Guests have access to a curated daily offering, including breakfast, afternoon tea, and twilight drinks with Champagne and canapés. The experience extends to a secluded outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean, offering a quieter vantage point above the main pool area.

Wellness also takes centre stage in this next chapter. The addition of two pickleball courts introduces a unique recreational element rarely seen in Sydney hotels, aligning with the active, outdoor lifestyle of the Eastern Suburbs.

The upcoming Èliva Spa is set to further elevate the property’s wellness credentials. Designed around the principles of rest, recovery and invigoration, the spa will feature a range of immersive facilities, including magnesium mineral pools, infrared and salt saunas, cold plunge baths and a crystal steam room. A dedicated recovery lounge will incorporate advanced wellness technologies such as PEMF infrared masks, LED facials, compression therapy and vitamin C-infused showers. Personalised treatments will combine modern techniques with nature-based therapies, while a 24-hour fitness studio ensures guests can maintain their routines around the clock.

According to General Manager Melinda Lampier, the transformation aims to strike a balance between sophistication and the laid-back spirit of Coogee. The new spaces are designed to encourage guests to slow down, connect with the natural surroundings and immerse themselves in the rhythm of coastal life.

Complementing the new additions is Shutters Restaurant & Bar, which opened alongside the hotel in December and anchors the property’s dining scene. Beyond the hotel itself, guests are invited to explore the neighbourhood through curated guides inspired by InterContinental’s long-standing concierge expertise. Recommendations range from snorkelling at Gordons Bay to sunrise swims at Wylie’s Baths, alongside local café experiences.

The reopening also reinforces the brand’s global growth trajectory. InterContinental currently operates more than 240 hotels worldwide, with continued expansion across the Asia Pacific region, including upcoming openings in Port Moresby and South Australia’s Barossa Valley.

With its latest transformation complete, InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach reasserts itself not just as a place to stay, but as a destination that brings together design, dining and lifestyle on one of Sydney’s most iconic stretches of coastline.
