A new design chapter unfolds at Sofitel London St James as the five-star property debuts its fully reimagined signature suites, marking the completion of a multi-phase refurbishment led by acclaimed Paris-based interior architect Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Anchored in Sofitel’s “Cultural Link” philosophy, the redesign bridges French elegance with London’s creative legacy specifically drawing inspiration from the bold, expressive spirit of the 1970s.

Four Prestige Suites are already open, while the launch of the two flagship concepts: Suite 70 and The Opera Suite signals the culmination of the hotel’s transformation and reinforces its standing as one of London’s most design-forward luxury addresses.

The redesign pays homage to Sofitel’s heritage as a conduit between French art de vivre and local culture. Rochon’s approach interprets London’s 1970s creative energy through a distinctly Parisian lens, balancing theatricality with refinement.

“Pierre-Yves Rochon has long embodied the French savoir-faire at the heart of Sofitel,” said General Manager Marie-Paule Nowlis. “With these suites, he delivers a bold yet refined vision that sets a new benchmark for design-led luxury in London.”

Suite 70: a bold tribute to a defining decade

Suite 70 embraces the vibrant cultural pulse of the 1970s, drawing heavily on the era’s music, stagecraft and graphic design language.

A striking palette of burnt orange, deep green, brown, black and white creates a dynamic, immersive environment reminiscent of backstage scenes and live performance venues. The suite’s narrative is reinforced through a series of bespoke elements:

  • Custom-designed bedside tables that double as dressing units
  • Rugs and carpets by Edition 169
  • Bathroom features developed with Devon & Devon, including the My Water Love vanity
  • Iconic furniture by Pierre Paulin, ensuring continuity across the redesigned suites

The space channels a theatrical “backstage” atmosphere, with textiles and wallcoverings developed in collaboration with Gallery B. At its centre sits the Experience Bar, designed as a concert trunk lined with vinyl records paired with a vintage-style record player and even a saxophone to evoke the analogue soul of the era.

The Opera Suite: softened glamour and residential elegance

In contrast, The Opera Suite offers a more understated, residential interpretation of 1970s design. Spanning 109 square metres and overlooking Waterloo Place, the suite presents a serene retreat in the heart of St James’s.

A muted palette of nude, pale pink, taupe, camel and ivory creates a cocoon-like atmosphere, punctuated by subtle red accents. The design emphasises comfort and tactility, expressed through:

  • Pierre Paulin armchairs and classic Knoll pieces, including the Tulip chair
  • A bespoke pale pink suede headboard inspired by sculptural 1970s forms
  • A sculptural in-room bar
  • Reintegrated architectural features such as a suspended library and mirror

The result is a refined, domesticated take on the decade-less theatrical, but equally evocative.

Each suite features a curated art collection by VISTO, a consultancy specialising in narrative-driven design. The artworks spanning emerging and established artists reflect London’s cultural landscape of the 1970s while maintaining a dialogue with French heritage and contemporary luxury.

The London relaunch forms part of a broader global repositioning of the Sofitel brand, with major renovations and openings across key markets including New York, Montreal, Sydney, Riyadh, Cairo and Cotonou.
