A 256-room opening in Osaka introduces a design-led, culturally immersive stay in one of the city’s most vibrant districts
Marriott International has officially introduced its Series by Marriott brand to Japan with the opening of Sugata Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi, a 256-room property positioned in the heart of Osaka’s lively Shinsaibashi district.
Part of the expansive Marriott Bonvoy portfolio, which spans more than 30 hotel brands globally, Series by Marriott is designed as a collection brand that brings together independent hotels under a unified umbrella balancing local character with globally consistent hospitality standards.
The Osaka opening marks a key milestone in the brand’s Asia Pacific expansion, following its initial debut in India.
A Strategic Expansion into Japan
“Series by Marriott is a regionally created, globally connected collection brand,” said Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer for Asia Pacific (excluding China). He noted that the Osaka property reflects the brand’s commitment to blending “thoughtful design and local storytelling” with the service consistency expected from Marriott.
Japan continues to be a priority market for Marriott, with the new opening underscoring its long-term growth strategy in the country.
Located in Shinsaibashi, the hotel places guests within walking distance of some of Osaka’s most iconic attractions, including: Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, Amerikamura, Dotonbori. Cultural landmarks such as Hozenji Temple, Kuromon Ichiba Market, and Namba Yasaka Shrine are all located within a two-kilometer radius.
Connectivity is equally seamless, with Shinsaibashi Station just 300 meters away, offering direct access via the Midosuji Line. Osaka Itami International Airport and Kansai International Airport are accessible within approximately 30 and 45 minutes by car, respectively.
Sugata Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi features 256 guestrooms designed to reflect Osaka’s warmth and cultural identity while catering to the expectations of modern travelers. The brand’s “effortless” philosophy translates into calming interiors and intuitive layouts, offering a restful retreat after a day exploring the city.
Social spaces are intentionally designed to feel familiar and communal, encouraging interaction and connection among guests. The hotel’s all-day dining venue, Ampere Coffee & Kitchen, serves a breakfast buffet alongside a menu combining locally inspired dishes with international classics.
Design Inspired by the Concept of ‘Sugata’
At the core of the hotel’s identity is the Japanese concept of “sugata” – a term that encompasses not only physical form, but also presence, atmosphere, and character.
This philosophy is expressed through a design narrative centered on the persona of a local Osaka insider, guiding guests through the city’s layered identity. Interiors balance the high-energy surroundings of Shinsaibashi with a tranquil, reflective atmosphere.
Natural materials, muted tones, and refined textures define the aesthetic, complemented by artistic elements inspired by the ginkgo-lined Midosuji Boulevard. Sculptural installations and curated art pieces further reinforce the property’s distinctive identity within Marriott’s growing Japan portfolio.
“Japan remains one of the most dynamic travel destinations globally,” said Yuji Tanaka, Market Vice President for Japan at Marriott International, highlighting the brand’s intent to introduce offerings that resonate with evolving traveler preferences.
The property is operated by EastGate Hospitality, whose CEO Hiroyuki Oki described the collaboration as an opportunity to create a “welcoming home base” that allows guests to experience Osaka from a local perspective.
